About Image Serenity Photography & Design

I have been in love with faces all my life. When I was was younger I drew them - constantly! That lead me to attend college for fine art, and when I picked up my first SLR camera in 2005 taking portraits became natural to me in an instant.

I love faces, I love people, I love capturing the love shared within families and among friends.

A trip up north…

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

This past week was spent up at my family’s 80 acre woodland homestead in Northern Wisconsin, as we were having our “reunion” of sorts. I spent the weekend with my camera strapped to my wrist, as usual, and captured as much of the event and as many family faces(silly, serious, happy, and chaotic) as one person possibly can… but those photos will wait for another day, because for now I’m going to post a few of my favorite “non-people” shots from the visit, as they’ve reawakened my love of nature photography(something that’s admittedly a little more difficult to do whilst living in the city) and the vibrancy of summertime.

Fix-it Friday 25

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I didn’t take this photo, I saw this image on Iheartfaces’ “Fix-it Friday” and had to get in on the editing action.

First I went in and made a curves adjustment layer to brighten up the image.
I then did some tweaking on a selective color adjustment layer to get some of the heavy magenta toning out of the image and push the neutral tones toward cyan and yellow.
I burned around the edges of the eyes a little, to make them stand out.
I adjusted the contrast and added an exclusion layer to give the photo a warmer feeling.
I used the unsharp mask to over sharpen the image and bring out some strong outlines.
I finished it all off with a “Burn my edges!” action, to get some deeper shadows back around the border.

Vicki & Steve – Sneak Peak

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Boy do I love weddings!

At the beginning of this month, on an absolutely perfect evening, I had the pleasure of photographing Vicki & Steve’s wedding ceremony and reception. I had a wonderful time working with them and their families, I could not have hoped for a more pleasant(or beautiful) shoot. I wish them much continued happiness.

Here are a couple of “sneak peak” shots, as I finish up the rest of the processing…

Fix-it Friday

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I took a stab at the Iheartfaces “Fix-It Friday” challenge, and am pleased with my result, so I figured I’d post it.

This is the original image:

This is my “fixed” image:

I used Photoshop CS4 to remove the blemishes and smooth out the skin.
I burned and dodged the eyes to make them “pop” out.
Then I applied the “Creamy Chocolate” action from CoffeeTeaPhotography.com which I then tweaked the settings on.
Finally I used the burn and dodge tools to get the contrast that I wanted in the hair and around the cheeks.
Finally I flattened and sharpened the image. Voila!

Crazy, Funny, Silly Face

Monday, August 10th, 2009

This week over at I Heart Faces they’re doing crazy/funny/silly faces, and when I saw the theme I immediately thought of this photo that I took of a friend of mine who was kind enough to come over and be my test subject as I practiced with my (then)new 40D. We spent a good deal of time goofing around during the session, so there were plenty of silly faces that came out of that shoot, but this one is my favorite – there’s something about those tiny little wrinkles in her brow that just make me giggle when I see them.

World Wide Photo Walk – Local Winner!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

I was exceptionally excited to learn the other day that the leader for the Madison photo walk chose MY image to be the local winner. When I signed up for the walk I admit I initially drooled over the prizes, but I never even imagined that I’d anything I would shoot would stand out in a crowd of other talented photographers!

This was my winning shot:

WWPW09
“Without a Roof”

Prizes and fuzzy feelings aside for a moment… I’m incredibly honored that out of all of the beautiful photos that were entered mine was chosen, for a couple of reasons:

  • 1. It always feels good to have my photography recognized by someone outside of my normal circle of feedback, it affirms to me that perhaps I’m on the right track as I continue to grow and learn this craft.
  • 2. I feel that the photo itself makes an important statement. First of all, I was raised by social justice activists, and as a result I have acquired a strong sense of compassion and appreciation for the stories of those who are less fortunate in our society. Homelessness is often overlooked… people without roofs tend to be invisible, or are judged without empathy, or are shown merely pity without compassion. I do not intend to stand here on a soapbox and go on righteously about humanitarianism, but if my photo makes someone look twice or think a little more about those less fortunate, then I feel as if maybe I’ve made a tiny bit of difference.

So for those reasons(and the previously mentioned fuzzy feelings) I’m extremely appreciative for the opportunity to share my image on the international scale, more than I can even express. Thank you.

My Story in Photos – Summer Edition

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Over at I♄Faces this week they’re doing “summer photos”, and since I was just looking through many of our summer pictures last night, I thought maybe I’d share some here.
Alan, Dmitri, and I have been quite busy this summer, somehow it’s hard to believe that we’re only just starting the first week of August(and on the other side of that it’s hard to believe that we’ve only got another month left to spend at the pool!).

Actually it kind of amazes me everything we’ve been able to squeeze into our schedule since May. I’ve been working non-stop, and yet we’ve been biking, sightseeing, traveling, visiting with family from New Mexico, and of course swimming – but I think my favorite “family adventurer day!”(as Dmitri likes to yell at the tops of his lungs) was in June when the three of us took a 3 hour hike through a local wildlife preserve. Here are some of my favorite snaps of that day…

I’ve included them as thumbnails for the sake of saving your bandwidth, but feel free to click on the thumbnails to see the full size images(complete with titles!)
