About Image Serenity Photography & Design

I have been in love with faces all my life. When I was was younger I drew them - constantly! That lead me to attend college for fine art, and when I picked up my first SLR camera in 2005 taking portraits became natural to me in an instant.

I love faces, I love people, I love capturing the love shared within families and among friends.

IHF Challenge: Surprise!

Monday, August 9th, 2010

The I Heart Faces theme this week is “Surprise!” and when I saw that in my mind I instantly went to this photo of my husband Alan and son Dmitri. We’re a goofy household, we like to laugh a lot, and play little jokes on each other, and generally act like 5 year old children (of the three of us, Dmitri is the only one with a proper excuse for this behavior). This is the type of thing that we do for fun on Thursday nights.

I had been doing something in the kitchen when I turned around to see Dmitri racing at his dad and like any good wife, instead of shooing the rambunctious child away from my sleeping husband, I grabbed my camera and clicked. It’s not the best photo of the two of them that I’ve ever taken, but it may just be one of my favorites. The look on Dmitri’s face just makes me giggle over and over again, and the contrast of chaos and calm between the two of them has never been more truly represented. My only regret is that I was too busy laughing at the outcome to take any photos of Alan’s expression when he was leaped upon, because that was the best part.

I Heart Pets!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Well… we don’t have any pets… Dmitri is too young, we live in the city, we don’t have enough time… there are a dozen reasons why we don’t have any fuzzy friends in our household, although we sure would love one someday! My entry for this week’s IHF  Pets Challenge is one that I took a couple of summers ago, but remains one of my favorite animal shots ever.

I took this shot back in 2007 when we first moved to Madison and I was still relatively new to photography(in fact, I had owned my first dSLR for under a year at this point). This is definitely an example of opportunity over experience. It was shot using my Rebel XT, with the kit lens, in direct sunlight, with no warning. Right place, right time, and by some miracle I set the camera and tripped the shutter and it worked! By the time all of the other experienced photographers around me got their cameras out, the moment was over.

Say Cheese!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I’m still behind in posting photos, the last week has been quite busy and there just hasn’t been any spare time, but I did want to get in on this week’s Iheartfaces challenge because I have JUST the picture:

My son, Dmitri, taken near Governor Nelson State Park last weekend.

One of the trails at the park runs parallel to the County Highway, under which is this funny square cement tunnel – not quite a bridge, not really a drain. It was windy that day and the way the wind came through the tunnel made all of the echos in it sound musical.

I ♥ Cake!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

This week’s I Heart Face’s Challenge is focusing on desserts! As much as I might talk about the healthy food we eat at home, if we’re going to have a REAL treat the best desserts around are cakes made by my friend Erin. Erin can do things with cake and fondant that many people only dream about, myself included. If I try to make a fancy cake, it looks like a giant deflated marshmallow attacked a lopsided tree stump… when Erin does it, her cakes look like this:

Dessert Swap

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

This week IHeartFaces asked us to share our favorite dessert recipes. Not an easy task for me considering that in the last year my husband and I have started turning into what you might call “health nuts”… almost to the point where some of our friends would suggest that we’ve gone overboard… I don’t know how true that is, however I AM adamant that you can’t be too healthy, and really encourage everyone to try to make at least one thing in their daily diet better for them.

But who wants to give up all the goodness of “real” food? Not I! Especially when it comes to dessert. Which is why I’m personally a huge fan of Hungry-Girl.com, and if you aren’t already, you should be. Lisa(aka Hungry Girl) has so many great recipes that involve simple swaps to make food you love better for you, with fewer calories, less fat, and no cardboard!

So I decided to post a recipe we created based on one of Hungry-Girl’s mailing list recipes.

Vanilla Pumpkin Confetti Cupcakes

1 15oz can of pure pumpkin(NOT pumpkin pie filling!)
1 box of ready to make cake-mix (we usually used the Reduced Sugar variety, but the store was out this week)
Optional Sprinkles

That’s it! Seriously! No eggs, no oil, no extra fat, just pumpkin, and all of the excellent vitamins that come with it!

Don’t forget to grab a super cute helper!

1. Set your oven to 350degrees.
2. Pour the dry cake mix into a bowl.
3. Stir in the pumpkin. The batter will be thick, that’s okay! Don’t add anything else that the box calls for!

4. Add the sprinkles and mix them in.
5. Prepare your tin and fill cupcakes.
6. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean!

7. Since there are no eggs in this cake, while you wait, you can lick the spoon!

8. Enjoy!

Yield: 12 Regular Cupcakes
Calories: 160-190(depending on your box mix)

Fix-It Friday #49

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Jesse over at The Lucas Zoo submitted this photo that was selected for the i♥faces Fix-it Friday this week, and it’s fabulous.

This is the before.

The first thing I did when I opened it was cropped it for a 5×7 ratio, which took care of the excess foreground space. Next I ran a couple of my own actions on it, one to boost the contrast, one to level out the midtones and darken the shadows, and one to add a peachy tone overall.

To finish up I ran a Portrait Pop action and then sharpened it with “Smart Sharpen”.

Program: CS4
Resources: Portrait Pop action + my own personal actions.

Black & White Drama

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Phew. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been able to participate over at Iheartfaces, though since the blog crash it looks like it’s been much longer than that! I’ve been exceedingly busy lately with shooting and home life and it just didn’t leave much room for blogging… but when I saw this week’s theme I HAD to play along.

This is a photo I took over 2 years ago during a practice & portfolio session I hosted at my home. Courtney was a great model, and brought a lot of fun to the shoot. It’s still one of my favorite black and whites.

Fix-it Friday 25

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I didn’t take this photo, I saw this image on Iheartfaces’ “Fix-it Friday” and had to get in on the editing action.

After
FF-After

First I went in and made a curves adjustment layer to brighten up the image.
I then did some tweaking on a selective color adjustment layer to get some of the heavy magenta toning out of the image and push the neutral tones toward cyan and yellow.
I burned around the edges of the eyes a little, to make them stand out.
I adjusted the contrast and added an exclusion layer to give the photo a warmer feeling.
I used the unsharp mask to over sharpen the image and bring out some strong outlines.
I finished it all off with a “Burn my edges!” action, to get some deeper shadows back around the border.

PS CS4.

Fix-it Friday

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I took a stab at the Iheartfaces “Fix-It Friday” challenge, and am pleased with my result, so I figured I’d post it.

This is the original image:

This is my “fixed” image:

after

I used Photoshop CS4 to remove the blemishes and smooth out the skin.
I burned and dodged the eyes to make them “pop” out.
Then I applied the “Creamy Chocolate” action from CoffeeTeaPhotography.com which I then tweaked the settings on.
Finally I used the burn and dodge tools to get the contrast that I wanted in the hair and around the cheeks.
Finally I flattened and sharpened the image. Voila!

Crazy, Funny, Silly Face

Monday, August 10th, 2009

This week over at I Heart Faces they’re doing crazy/funny/silly faces, and when I saw the theme I immediately thought of this photo that I took of a friend of mine who was kind enough to come over and be my test subject as I practiced with my (then)new 40D. We spent a good deal of time goofing around during the session, so there were plenty of silly faces that came out of that shoot, but this one is my favorite – there’s something about those tiny little wrinkles in her brow that just make me giggle when I see them.
